Caithness

Caithness is Scotland's most northerly county with two main towns - Thurso and Wick. Caithness covers a large area of the north east of Scotland, the landscape is varied, and while the landscape is flatter with less mountains than Sutherland there is outstanding seascapes, areas of historic interest and many places to visit.

Caithness is well known for high tech industries as well as for traditional industries including farming and fishing - crofting is important to this area and Caithness is one of the areas where crofts make up a good portion of the countryside.

When you travel through Caithness you will see that the countryside is rich in a wide range of farms, arable and livestock - many people keep their own chickens and you will often see signs along the roads for free range eggs for sale, they are usually cheaper than store bought eggs - and many people believe they taste better. Tourism plays a very important part of Caithness life and the county encourages and develops tourism to the area with excellent holiday accommodation and travel facilities.

Caithness is also the main ferry point for Orkney.

Mary-Ann Calder Cottage

The cottage and croft was lived in by Mary-Ann Calder from the 1930's and the cottage has been preserved in memory of the crofting life common throughout the Scottish Highlands at this time. Mary-Ann was born in 1897 and lived in the cottage and ran the croft until 1990. In 1994 the cottage was opened as a "living museum" and is now owned and run by the Caithness Heritage Trust. The museum is open during the summer and run by volunteers, during the winter it is visited by many local school children on educational visits.

Caithness has several outstanding beaches that are great for all the family. Caithness is also known for it's fantastic surfing beaches and while the photograph shown above is on a beautiful calm and sunny day there is often days when you just need a surf board. The beaches are also known for sea fishing, Dunnet Beach for it's bass and flat fish.

Dunnet Forest

Dunnet forest is woodland that is owned and run by the Dunnet Forestry Trust. They have done a brilliant job of opening the forest up to the public and this is a very popular place for people to walk. Caithness is a fairly windy place and when it is too breezy to walk on the beach then you will find the woodland walk at Dunnet Forest just perfect for walking the dog(s) or taking kids out on nature walks.

On a recent visit to the forest in late summer 08 I was lucky to photograph a butterfly known in this area - Little Blue.
